An exceptional opportunity has opened up for an experienced professional passionate about protecting civic space and strengthening protest movements. Vuka, in partnership with CIVICUS, is seeking a consultant to lead the crucial update of its flagship Protest Handbook & Support Phonebook, a vital resource for activists and civil society organizations worldwide.

This Vuka CIVICUS Consultancy is a remote, three-month role designed for an expert in human rights and activism, running from September to November 2025.

The Project’s Goal

The primary objective of Vuka CIVICUS Consultancy is to lead the content review and development of the updated handbook and phonebook. The goal is to ensure these resources provide activists with accurate, user-friendly, and up-to-date legal, practical, and strategic guidance to strengthen protest action and protection in a rapidly changing global environment.

Your Key Responsibilities

As the lead consultant, you will be responsible for a range of tasks, including:

  • Desk Review & Gap Analysis: Reviewing the existing handbook and identifying areas for updates in light of recent protest movements and legal changes.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Conducting interviews with partners and allies to gather new case studies, feedback, and good practices from different regions.
  • Content Development: Drafting updated and expanded content, including new case studies and practical guidance relevant to various regions.
  • Validation & Collaboration: Organizing and facilitating an online validation workshop and coordinating with graphic designers to ensure the final product is visually appealing and accessible.

The Ideal Candidate

This Vuka CIVICUS Consultancy is looking for a candidate with a specific set of skills and experiences:

  • Demonstrated expertise in human rights, protest movements, and civic space, preferably with international experience.
  • Strong research, analysis, and content development skills, especially in writing for activist audiences.
  • Experience in producing guides, handbooks, or toolkits for activists or civil society.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, with French, Spanish, or Arabic being an asset.
