Bertha Challenge: Call for Applications for the 2026 Fellowship Program

Are you an activist, investigative journalist, filmmaker, or lawyer dedicated to confronting injustice? The Bertha Foundation has officially opened the call for applications for its prestigious Bertha Challenge 2026, a one-year fellowship designed to support those investigating and exposing critical global issues.

This year’s Challenge is focused on the intersection of power, politics, and profit, particularly in the context of dismantling democracies and the rise of hybrid regimes supported by corporate and wealthy interests.

What is the Bertha Challenge?

The objective of the Bertha Challenge is to provide dedicated time and resources to fellows for projects that address the erosion of a free press, the weakening of the rule of law, and the influence of authoritarian leaders and tech firms. It is an opportunity to develop a significant body of work that can bring about meaningful change.

Who Can Apply?

The Bertha Challenge fellowship is open to a global cohort of leaders in their fields. Eligible applicants include:

  • Activists
  • Investigative Journalists
  • Filmmakers and Storytellers
  • Lawyers

Applicants must propose a one-year project that directly addresses the 2026 Challenge question and is part of a longer-term initiative.
